Those tacos: There is significant debate about the origins of the Taco, with some arguing that the taco predates the arrival of the Spanish in Mexico. There is anthropological evidence that the indigenous people living in the lake region of the Valley of Mexico traditionally ate tacos filled with small fish. Writing at the time of the Spanish conquistadors, Bernal Díaz del Castillo documented the first taco feast enjoyed by Europeans, a meal which Hernán Cortés arranged for his captains in Coyoacán. Others argue that the advent of the taco is much more recent, with one of the more popular theories being that the taco was invented by silver miners in the 18th century. However the first mention of the word "taco" in Mexico was in the 1891 novel Los bandidos de Río Frío by Manuel Payno.
But no. The tACoS we are talking about is, not are, from Asheville NC.
In 2011, James Forrester, who was serving as a state senator at the time, decided that what North Carolina really needed more than anything else was a constitutional amendment banning not only gay marriage, but civil unions and domestic partner benefits. While he was engaging in his campaign of hate, he referred to Asheville as a ‘cesspool of sin.’ Asheville being what it was at the time, we took that as a badge of pride and immediately churned out a ton of “Cesspool of Sin” merchandise. You couldn’t walk downtown without seeing at least a couple of cars with a cesspool of sin bumper sticker. ‘Cesspool of Sin’ is a freeform radio show curated by Minx, with a focus on upbeat and heartfelt tunes composed by underrepresented groups, and across all genres.
In 2022, Claire Elizabeth Barratt, director of Asheville’s Center for Connection + Collaboration, introduced ’the Asheville Cesspool of Synths’, an annual festival of electronic musicians who play synthesizers, or synths. Thus the acronym ’tACoS.’ This album is for Claire Elizabeth and the AVL-CCC, see you at the next tACoS! The only tACoS that really counts!
